Why Is Darkness Settling over Our Land, and What Can We Do?
The one task that would bring advance for the kingdom of heaven is the unwavering, relentless sharing of the good news of Christ.
Our greatest offensive weapon (the one that will be used to win the day) is Word-driven prayer. ALL kinds of prayer, at ALL times, with ALL perseverance for ALL the saints. Why is prayer so effective? Prayer brings God into the equation, enlists the resources of heaven, and does what God can do. Satan’s hosts... Continue Reading
A Great Sin: Exodus 32:15-35
As we come to the Table of our King, let us give thanks that Christ has indeed put an end to all our sin.
Though you and I are no less sinful and idolatrous than the Israelites and no less prone to make light of or excuse our sin than Aaron, we have One who is greater than Moses who has made atonement for our sins. Being both eternal God and the only sinless man, Jesus alone was fit... Continue Reading
Eat This, Not That
If you were “unclean” because of certain foods you had eaten, you were temporarily barred from approaching the tabernacle for worship and sacrifice.
Though eating certain foods and avoiding certain foods might have some health benefits, not all of the forbidden foods could be explained by hygienic concerns. Consider, too, that Jesus declared all foods clean (Mark 7:19). This declaration wouldn’t mean that we shouldn’t think about how foods affect us. This declaration does, however, confirm that the... The Bible and Slavery
When someone brings up slavery as an excuse for rejecting the Bible as a reliable moral guide, I would recommend referring to the Apostle Paul’s commands to Christian masters (Ephesians 6:9; Colossians 4:1).
Accepting what the Bible teaches on slavery does not mean condoning slavery as it was once practiced in America. Some, such as William Lloyd Garrison, assumed that it did and rejected the Bible altogether. Others didn’t go that far but did begin to regard their conscience as a more reliable guide to morality than the... Continue Reading
Till He Was Strong
What Makes the Strong So Weak?
It is not a matter of strong or weak, but where we place our trust. If we are prideful then we will find ourselves in opposition to God. But if we humble ourselves, and see ourselves as we ought, then God gives more grace. May we be the blessed weak who lean on a strong... Continue Reading
A New Birth
Without rebirth, we can never experience regeneration.
There was once a time where death had its strangle hold on you, but not now! Now you are lifted high by the very hands of God and seated in the heavenly realms as renewed, refreshed, and regenerated. New birth through Christ Jesus brings a new stunning reality—you are a child of God. You were... Continue Reading
Gospel Hope for a Culture Fixated on Getting Even
The desire for revenge.
As Christians, we can love our neighbors by helping them see that their inclination to get even, while understandable, is a destructive dead end. Jesus shows us a better, more effective, more satisfying way. Perhaps the recurrent theme of revenge is a just that: a black backdrop against which we see, for the actual wonder... Continue Reading
Thinking of Home
The ultimate hope of my soul is to see the resurrected Christ in His Father’s house, and He promised that this will happen.
Every single person, Christian or not, longs to be reunited with loved ones who have died, but the Christian longs to be with Christ. I can’t wait to see my father, my mother, and my friends in heaven, but beyond that, the ultimate hope of my soul is to see the resurrected Christ in His... Continue Reading
Works in the Book of James—“Fruits and Evidences of a True and Lively Faith”
Justification and Sanctification—Two Benefits of Salvation in Christ
James is writing about how true justifying faith leads to sanctification—to good works. He writes that a mere intellectual faith that does not lead to good works is dead (2:17). The question is then, what do good works do? Do they make us right with God? Or do they show that God has justified a... Continue Reading
The Sinful Serpents Twisted Around My Soul
Commune with your own heart daily; beware of Satan’s devices.
At times I am ready to hope the gloomy territories of the grave are almost ready for me, that I may lay down this body of sin upon the block for everlasting execution. O! when shall these clogs and fetters be knocked off, and the dark and gloomy walks of this valley of tears, be... Continue Reading
