Robert Scotty Hastings, 1913-2003
In 1946, Scotty began what would be a twenty-year tenure as Stated Clerk of the B.P.C. General Synod. Pastor Hastings was honorably retired by Covenant Presbytery (P.C.A.) in 1996.
In presbytery meetings if someone was needed to finish populating an ordination commission or take a seat on a committee, Scotty was often willing to help. He always had a word of encouragement for other ministers and provided wise assistance to many pastors during his numerous years of ministry. He was a kind and patient... Continue Reading
Abide with Me
“Abide with Me” was written by the Scottish Anglican priest Henry F. Lyte (1793-1847). Lyte was a reputed poet and hymnodist.
Lyte preached as a dying man to dying men. He knew that life was but a vapor and that sinful man must make haste to close with Christ. And even as his own life began to fade, Lyte pointed others to the solace that he found in knowing that our unchangeable God abides with all... Continue Reading
The First Thanksgiving, Edward Winslow, 1621
By the goodness of God we are so far from want that we often wish you could partake of our plenty.
[Paragraph regarding the first Thanksgiving] Our harvest being collected our governor sent four men fowling together so we might rejoice together in a more special way after we had gathered the fruit of our labors. In just one day the hunters killed as much fowl as if their hunting party had been larger. The fowl... Continue Reading
What If a Criminal Justice System Isn’t Actually Just?
In Reforming Criminal Justice, Matthew Martens addresses a subject that concerns few of us but ought to concern all of us. He explains what the Bible says about criminal justice, calls us to analyze the systems our nations have, and encourages us to advocate for ones that are better, which is to say, ones that reflect God’s love and God’s justice.
An arrest, a jail sentence, or a death penalty are all acts of violence in which the system uses force against a person who has been made in the image of God. God permits this in order to maintain law and order in his world. However, it is critical that such violence be committed justly,... Continue Reading
Religion True or False?
The goal of true religion – unstained by culture around.
We live in a polluted, irreligious, narcissistic, culture ruled by the idolatry of self. God has little place. Others are only a means to exploit. The needy are bypassed and of small concern to us. The intensely practical nature of real godliness calls us to a cross, to death of sin and self, that the... Continue Reading
The Purpose of Theology in Times of Uncertainty
Contemplation on fellowship with God strengthens those anxious about the earthly world seemingly turned upside down all around them.
In tumultuous times, communion with God, is both “perfect and complete” and “initial and incomplete.” It is perfect and complete, Owen explained, “in the full fruition of his glory,” and initial and incomplete “in the first fruits and dawnings of that perfection which we have here in grace.” Thus, contemplation on fellowship with God strengthens... One Thing My Parents Did Right: A Home Grounded in Reality
The cracks in the foundation of my atheism began to widen, I legitimately considered other perspectives that could better account for the world around me.
When I was around 10 years old, I was a little philosopher piecing together life’s meaning in a world without God. I once confidently told my mom the purpose of life was to pursue happiness. I was sure that in a world devoid of any transcendent standards to which I might be held accountable, this... Continue Reading
Social Justice Anywhere Is a Threat to Justice Everywhere
If social justice proponents cared about the evidence, then they would welcome Social Justice Fallacies.
Sowell makes it clear that the state should reject the social justice vision and its agenda. The natural end point, he states, is “having government empower surrogate decision-makers to rescue victims of various forms of mistreatment by taking many decisions out of other people’s hands” (82). Our ever-growing administrative state is full of people convinced... Continue Reading
The Apostle Paul and the Jews
Israel’s disobedience led to mercy to the Gentiles which will lead to mercy to Israel.
We who are Gentiles ought to learn the lesson, that if God did not spare the natural branches, there is no reason why He should spare the wild branches. This means that we are required to stand by faith (v.20) – to humbly trust the grace of God and to fear Him. Some have said that... Continue Reading
Maj. Daniel Iverson, Decorated Marine Pilot
The almost to the day six-month Guadalcanal campaign ebbed and flowed in intensity, but for Iverson and the flyers the great challenge was destroying Japanese naval and support vessels while dodging bullets at the airstrip and in the air.
Early in May the Battle of the Coral Sea had taken place, after which the Japanese moved their forces to attack Midway. Included in the massive fleet were four heavy aircraft carriers. It was the second day of battle, June 4, as events unfolded, Iverson and his gunner Private First-Class Wallace Reed climbed aboard their... Continue Reading
