Sotomayor Blocks Contraceptive Mandate Until Friday
Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor issued an emergency stay temporarily blocking the contraceptive mandate for a number of Catholic organizations in Colorado.
Sotomayor handles emergency applications from the 10th Circuit, which includes a number of Western states. On Dec. 30, the 10th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals had denied an injunction to Little Sisters of the Poor Home for the Aged, Christian Brothers Services, and Christian Brothers Employee Benefits Trust. The lawsuit was filed as a class... Continue Reading
Congress Strengthens Religious Freedom For The Military
The Senate passed a defense bill that includes important language to strengthen and protect the religious freedom of military members and chaplains.
The 2014 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) includes the standard provisions for funding the military as well as amendments that expand the protection of military members’ religious freedoms, including their personal beliefs, actions, and speech. Specific language in the NDAA protects the freedom of military chaplains to “close a prayer outside of a religious service... Continue Reading
A Privileged Call: Jane Patete Retires After 12 Years With CEP
“His purposes were that I would serve. These have been some of the most challenging and glorious years of my life."
“Jane has been an excellent example of a woman who uses her gifts to serve the church with great humility,” said Stephen Estock, current CEP coordinator. “She is consumed with a passion for seeing the next generation know the beauty and dignity of living as adopted daughters of God in service to His kingdom.” ... How I Escaped the Mormon Temple
After being in the LDS Church for 30 years, I began reading the New Testament. What was there shocked me.
When I read what Jesus said in John 6:44, “No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws them,” I knew I was being drawn—sucked, pulled, conveyed, transported. In physics, an event horizon is a boundary beyond which the gravitational pull is so powerful that there is no escape. This was... Continue Reading
The 5 Points of Mattie Ross
The novel ‘True Grit’ is set in my lifelong home of Fort Smith and Mattie Ross was an ardent Southern Presbyterian.
The 5 Points of Mattie Ross … Good theology, a good read, or both? You decide. For me, I would have ridden into Indian Territory with her for the engaging conversation and theology lessons alone. Or, in the words of Mattie Ross, “There you have it. It was good for Paul and Silas and it... Continue Reading
Is the Bible infallible? The Southern Baptist Theologian Who Said No, and Why: William Hull
William E. Hull was a gifted teacher, administrator, and preacher; not many pull off all three of these
For years, Hull also tried to bridge differences between conservatives and moderates in the Southern Baptist Convention. “He was one of the most consequential Baptist leaders of the last 100 years,” said Beeson Divinity School Dean Timothy George. “He was filled with hope. It was a hope grounded in God’s loving purpose for all creation.”... Continue Reading
A Letter to My “Mixed” Son
Shane Huey
Your identity won’t be found exclusively in your race or ethnicity. That doesn’t mean that you are “raceless.” The errors of color-blindness are well stated. Take great pride in your culture and heritage. But identifying yourself primarily by your race, however you choose to define it, will only grant you superficial affiliation with a group... Psalm 73 and The Pornographer
The vain life and then death of a pornographer
“I’m losing my teeth, and life sucks. … Christine and I broke up. 40 years is too big an age difference. … I’m old news, I’m yesterday’s paper on the bottom of a bird cage. … My son, I haven’t talked to in eight years … he didn’t invite me to graduation at Harvard.... Continue Reading
18 Things I Will Not Regret Doing With My Kids
Pondering those things I will never regret doing with my kids
Telling them “I love you”. I love my children dearly and I can show that love in each of the ways I’ve listed above. But when they head off to school, when they go out with friends, when they call me at the office, when we FaceTime from afar, I will never regret telling them... Continue Reading
Joel Osteen Talks Preaching Sin, Materialism, and Gay Marriage
Mega-church pastor continues positive, upbeat messages without a view to sin and other negative aspects of Scripture.
Osteen clarified that he believes God blesses people so that they in turn can bless others. “That’s the whole key. It’s never about just what can I get so that I can be so rich and wealthy. It’s not that. It’s how can I be blessed to do good for other people,” he said. ... Continue Reading
