How Rick Warren Harnessed the Power of Social Habits
And why—after plunging into depression—Saddleback's pastor now pushes spiritual habits through 'The Power of Habit' concept.
For years, he had suffered from anxiety attacks and occasional bouts of melancholy that friends told him sounded like mild depressions. But it had never hit this bad before. The next day, Warren and his family began driving to Arizona, where his wife's family had a house. Slowly, he recuperated. Some days, he would sleep for twelve hours and then take a walk through the desert, praying, trying to understand why these panic attacks were threatening to undo everything he had worked so hard to build.
ARCHIVE: Why Evangelicals Should Pay Attention to Congressman Paul Ryan and the Battle over the Social Teaching of the Catholic Church
These concerns are genuine, and Evangelicals who are conservative politically should resist the temptation to take Ryan's side just because he is a conservative Republican. One should always be suspicious of politicians when they claim theological authority for their actions. Nevertheless, I cannot help but think that it is a good thing that Ryan is highlighting principles like subsidiarity, and the preference for the poor, and introducing them to the national dialogue.
Keeping the Faith on Campus
Students at secular schools face challenges that can invigorate or smother their faith
"When students enter college, all of their social-based support for that internalized faith is gone, leaving them to test its structural integrity…That spiritual scaffolding is taken away. The question is, is it strong enough to stand on its own?"
U.S. gold medalist Gabby Douglas: ‘glory goes’ to God
"Let all that I am praise the LORD; may I never forget the good things he does for me."
"When it was time for me to go to bed I would just put my earphones in and just fall asleep listening to the Bible," she told the congregation. "It's been a daily thing. I love reading about the Word. We have to put on the full armor of God, so when Satan tries to come against us, we are ready and prepared."
Sex and the Single Olympian: Lolo Jones Talks about Her Virginity
The world-class runner shows that virginity isn't just for nerdy 18-year-olds – and that following God's plan for sexuality can be really hard
Is it sad that we are more impressed that an attractive 29-year-old woman has managed not have sex than we are that she has distinguished herself as one of the best runners in the world? Perhaps. But we’ve seen this before with another world-class athlete. Lori “Lolo” Jones is a world-class athlete. She won three... Continue Reading
Denied a Hotel Room by Atheist Proprietor in London
The intolerance of the so called tolerant
There is the preferred public perception that Christians are the intolerant ones and atheists are the unstinting champions of diversity and tolerance. But I guess not in this case? But you’ve given me something to muse on: Do atheists actually believe and practice their own creed of tolerance and diversity, or simply employ the rhetoric?... Continue Reading

Dos and Don’ts for Shepherding the Wife of a Sexual Struggler
Many pastors are successfully counseling hurting wives with the compassion and skill they desperately need
I am shocked by how many pastors’ first response is to dismiss a wife’s concerns about her husband’s use of pornography: “Are you sure about this? It just doesn’t sound like the man I know. ” Sexual strugglers are masters of deception. It happened again. I met with a wife of a sexual struggler who... Continue Reading
Farewell, Friend and Father, John W. Batchelor
A tribute to Ruling Elder John W. Batchelor, age 97, who died on August 1 in Pennsylvania
I have said little about John’s faith. Like all things personal, it was not something John talked about a lot. But his faith was real, strong, and true. He believed in God, in Christ, in salvation by grace through faith, and in the Bible, and he did not waver. When he spoke, others listened, just... Continue Reading
