It was a big week for Lookout Mountain’s David Caines. He was named president of Kenco Logistics. Then on Sunday night it was announced that his family won the top $100,000 prize on “America’s Funniest Home Videos” on ABC TV. (Editor’s Note: David is the son of PCA Minister J. Render Caines of Covenant PC, Chattanooga)
The audience voted a video furnished by David and Mary Smartt Caines as the best of the season.
The show was taped a couple of weeks ago, and the couple was under strict orders not to let the secret out.
They watched at the home of Sam and Donna Smartt on the mountain.
Numerous other Caines and Smartt family members around the area were tuning in as well, including sister, Gretchen Caines Brown in Ringgold.
She said, “Our kids watch it every Sunday night anyway, and they were sure not to miss this one.”
She said their family had no idea until the end of the show that the local couple had gotten the top prize.
The couple, along with their four children, earlier were in the audience to accept an initial $10,000 prize. That qualified them for the season finale.
The video is actually just a white screen. The humor came in the conversation from son, Miles, and daughter, Eleanor, about it.
Miles dropped the camera while on a sled in the snow and he worries aloud about getting in trouble and being irresponsible. His sister was trying to reassure him.
The show’s host said it was the first time a video was a winner based on just the conversation and not on what is seen on the screen.
Mr. Caines is the son of Rev. Render and Linda Jackson Caines of Ringgold.
